小伙伴们有没有遇到这样一个怪现象:
不用东西时,
这些东西就在眼前,
要用东西时,
“翻箱倒柜”都找不到!
说起翻箱倒柜,
最直接的翻译就是
rummage through chests and cupboards,
但有时我们不一定是翻了箱子倒了柜子,
而只是想表达当时我们的动作和情景,
所以我们可以用下面的表达:
1. root around 翻找,翻寻 或者root through/in
root的本意是根;根源,作动词表达翻找,翻寻,这个短语尤指在其他物品中寻找,搜寻。
例:She rooted through the bag, found what she wanted, and headed toward the door.
她在这个包里搜寻了一番,找到了她想要的东西,然后朝门口走去。
2. rummage v. ['rʌmɪdʒ] 翻找,翻寻,乱翻
rummage常和in/through搭配,形容翻箱倒柜地寻找,着急且不细致。
3. turn sth upside down 将……翻了个底朝天
这个短语指你搜遍了整个角落,常常还留下一片狼藉。
例:The thieves turned the room upside down.
小偷把屋子弄得个乱七八糟。
你也可以用 turned everything topsy-turvy来形容找东西后狼藉的场面。
topsy-turvy [,tɔpsi'tə:vi] 是指颠倒地,乱七八糟地
4. 东西难找,像大海捞针我们可以用:like finding a needle in a haystack
haystack是干草堆的意思,在草堆里找针(needle),不就是大海捞针嘛!
例:The movie theater was so crowded that getting a seat was like finding a needle in a haystack.
电影院大爆棚,想找到一个座位可谓大海捞针。
