John and Stella Chhan came to the United States from Cambodia in 1979. They bought the donut shop Donut City in Seal Beach, California 10 years later. For the next 29 years, the Chhans sold delicious and inexpensive donuts to the neighborhood, and the people love them.
Several weeks ago, Dawn Caviola, a woman from the neighborhood, found that John was still working in Donut City, but Stella was missing from the shop. It turned out that Stella could not talk or move weeks ago, because she had a aneurysm at the end of September. And John went to be with her every day after selling out his donuts. John said he wanted to spend more time with Stella.
"Days went by and I just couldn't get it out of my head," Dawn said. "So I thought, if people would buy a dozen donuts every morning, he could close up early and be with Stella." Then in their time of need, Dawn called on her neighborhood to buy donuts from Donut City. And many people came to help! Now John finishes work at Donut City around three hours earlier. Sometimes, he can close up as early as 10:00 a.m.
"We are so thankful," John said. "Stella is a lot better. She can speak now and she is learning how to eat again."
