trophy:A trophy is a prize, for example, a silver cup, that is given to the winner of a competition or race. Or something that you keep in order to show that you have done something very difficult.

古希腊人每打胜仗总要庆祝一番,他们会在敌人被击溃处或者敌人开始败退处竖起纪念杆,将缴获的敌军军旗和刀剑、矛斧、头盔、盔甲及盾牌等武器悬挂在杆子上,将部分战利品摆放在栎树底下,献给他们的守护神。这种纪念杆某种意义上相当于一个胜利纪念碑,在希腊语中叫tropaion,原义为“转折点”(turning point)。

后来,古罗马人也沿袭了这个传统,但通常是在公共场所建造凯旋拱门或者矩形柱子,拉丁文称其为trophaeum,后来衍生出了英语单词trophy,词义不再局限于“胜利纪念碑”,多指“战利品”或“胜利纪念品”,最后又引申为“奖品”或“奖杯”。
