The country vegetables scorn

To lie about in shops

They stand upright as they were born

In neatly-patterned crops;

And when you want your dinner you

Don't buy it from a shelf,

You find a lettice with dew

And pull it for yourself;

You pick an apronful of peas

And shell them on the spot.

You cut a cabbage , if you please,

To pop into the pot.

The folk whose potatoes buy

From sacks before they sup,

Miss half of the potato's joy,

And that's to dig it up.

蔬菜

园子里的蔬菜鄙夷

在店里四处乱躺,

它们出生时就挺立,

整齐地排列成行。

当你想要一餐果腹,

无须到店里花钱,

挑棵生菜挂着露珠

拔出来自己尝鲜。

摘下满围裙的豆荚,

当场把豆子拨出;

砍棵白菜,乐意的话,

可立即下锅烹煮。

餐前去采买的一族,

只买袋装的土豆,

未亲手把土豆掘出,

糟蹋了一半享受。
