JIA Dao (779-843), Gate Fairy by courtesy name and Native of Mt. Brownstone by literary name, was a poet in the Tang dynasty known as the “Poetry Slave”. He was born in Fanyang County, Youzhou (present-day Zhuozhou, Hebei Province). Meng Jiao and Jia Dao developed the so-called “Jiao's Coldness and Dao's Thinness”, an aloof and proud poetry style. His poems could be found in A Collection of the Yangtze River.

A Swordsman

By JIA Dao

Tr. ZHAO Yanchun

I've honed the sword for ten years,

Its freezing edge not yet tried.

Who is shedding wronged tears?

Behold, this sword will be now plied.
