For I do not want any one to read my book carelessly（粗心地）. I have suffered（遭受） too much grief（悲伤） in setting down（放下） these memories（记忆）. Six years have already passed since my friend went away from me, with his sheep. If I try to describe（描述） him here, it is to make sure that I shall not forget him. To forget a friend is sad. Not every one has had a friend. And if I forget him, I may become like the grown-ups（大人） who are no longer interested（感兴趣） in anything but figures（数字）.
It is for that purpose（目的）, again, that I have bought a box of paints（颜料） and some pencils（铅笔）. It is hard to take up drawing（绘画） again at my age, when I have never made any pictures except those of the boa constrictor（蟒蛇） from the outside and the boa constrictor from the inside, since I was six. I shall certainly try to make my portraits（肖像） as true to life as possible.
But I am not at all sure of success（成功）. One drawing goes along all right（尚可）, and another has no resemblance（相似） to its subject（题材）. I make some errors（错误）, too, in the little prince’s height（身高）: in one place he is too tall and in another too short. And I feel some doubts（怀疑） about the color of his costume（服装）. So I fumble（支支吾吾） along as best I can, not good, not bad, and I hope generally（大概） fair-to-middling（过得去）.
In certain（特定） more important details（细节） I shall make mistakes, also. But that is something that will not be my fault（错误）. My friend never explained anything to me. He thought, perhaps, that I was like himself. But I, alas（哎）, do not know how to see sheep through the walls of boxes. Perhaps I am a little like the grown-ups. I have had to grow old.
