1、看先行词和定语从句中的谓语动词的关系来确定关系代词或关系副词。

1)定语从句中的谓语动词如果缺少主语,先行词为人时就用关系代词 who / that;先行词为物时就用关系代词 which / that。例如:

Themanwho / thatteachesusEnglishisfromHainanprovince.

The building which / that stands near the post office is a middle school.

2)定语从句中的谓语动词如果缺乏宾语,且又是及物动词时就要选择适当的关系代词 which / that / who / whom;如果为不及物动词,则用关系副词 ( 表示地点用 where;表示时间用 when)或用适当的介词加关系代词 which / whom。例如:

I'llneverforgetthedaywhich/thatTomspentinQingdao.(spe-nt 及物动词 )

I'll never forget the day when / on which Tom worked in Qingdao. (worked 不及物动词 )

I'll never forget the farm which / that I visited in 2000. (visited及物动词 )

I'll never forget the farm on which / where Tom worked last year. (worked 不及物动词 )

2、看先行词和定语从句中的主语的关系来确定关系代词。

1)如果先行词和定语从句的主语分属于空格的两边,且两者又是从属关系,则用 whose。例如:

The house whose windows face south is Tom's.

TheboywhosefatherworksinBeijingisinNo.2MiddleSchool.

2)如果先行词和定语从句的主语,两者都在空格的左边,且又是属于从属关系就用介词 of 加关系代词 which 或 whom。例如:

The house,the windows of which face south,is Tom's.

The boy,the father of whom works in Beijing,is in No.2Middle School.

③看主句中有特殊要求的词来确定关系代词 that / which。

1)主句中含有最高级、序数词时,用 that / who。例如:

This the longest river that crosses nine cities.

This is the first man that / who we meet at the airport.

2)先行词为 everything (nothing,anything) ,all 等词时。例如:

You must do everything that I do.

You are the only one student who / that comes from the USA.

She did all that she could to help him.

3)主句中含有 which / who 时,用 that。例如:

Who is the man that is reading under the tree?

Whose is the pen that is lying on the desk?

4)先行词为人和物同时出现时,用 that。例如:

We will never forget the teachers and schools that we visited last week.
