①在···以上，高于；超过（表示职位、数量、年龄等）， 如：
He is the man above her.
他是她的上司。

②在···上方，高出（表示位置）， 如：
The whole sky above us is filled with stars.
我们头顶上的天空中布满了星星。
The plane is flying above the clouds.
飞机在云层上面飞行。
③可代替beyond表“超越，越过···之外；不屑于（表示品质、行为、能力等，但不常用）”，如：
The book is above me(or my understanding).
这本书我读不懂。
His ability is above the common people.
他能力超群。
She is above other students in the class.
她的学习成绩超过班上其他学生。
【辨析】英语中表示“在···的上面／下面”的介词有on, over, under, above, below, 试比较：
on, over与 above 意为“在··之上”：
（1)on多用于与物体有接触时，位于物体的表面、边上、线上，如：
on the table 在桌子上
on the wall 在墙上
on the other side of 在···的另一边
on the left 在左边nose ii
on the train 在火车上
（2)above 侧重于指上下位置，有对比或参照物，如：
The picture is above the map.
那幅画在地图上方。
The mountain is about 2 000 meters above the
sea level. 那座山海拔约有2000米。
（3)over 侧重于指横跨两端，或有覆盖的含义，如：
Hang the picture over the bookshelf.
把这张画挂在书架上面。
She spread a cloth over the table.eu:

There is a bridge over the river.
在河的上边横跨一座桥。
under与 below意为“在···之下”：
（1)under与 below 均可表“正下方”， 如：
The water reached a few inches below/under the

（2)表示“低于···”时仅用 below, 此时与 above 为反义，如：
The temperature today is below 0C.obI
