一、课文原文
Lesson 88 Trapped in a mine
Six men have been trapped in a mine for seventeen hours. If they are not brought to the surface soon they may lose their lives. However, rescue operations are proving difficult. If explosives are used, vibrations will cause the roof of the mine to collapse. Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine. They intend to bring the men up in a special capsule. If there had not been a hard layer of rock beneath the soil, they would have completed the job in a few hours. As it is, they have been drilling for sixteen hours and they still have a long way to go. Meanwhile, a microphone, which was lowered into the mine two hours ago, has enabled the men to keep in touch with the closest relatives. Though they are running out of food and drink, the men are cheerful and confident that they will get out soon. They have been told that rescue operations are progressing smoothly. If they knew how difficult it was to drill through the hard rock, they would lose heart.

二、重点句型或语法
本课主要是复习第16课、第40课和第64课所学的if条件句的用法。英语中的条件句分为真实条件句和非真实条件句。
（一）第16课
本课侧重学习的是真实条件句的用法，其基本用法为“主将从现”，即主句谓语动词采用一般将来时，从句谓语动词采用一般现在时。如：
If he leaves tomorrow, we will see him off at the station.

真实条件句还有几种其他用法：
主现从现：If it rains, the grass gets wet.
主祈从现：If he comes this afternoon, tell him the news.
主情从现：If it is sunny next Saturday, we can walk to the park.
（二）第40课
本课侧重学习的是非真实条件句中针对现在时间和将来时间的虚拟假设，其基本用法如下：
1、针对现在时间
其基本用法为：主句谓语动词采用“would / should/ could / might do”，从句谓语动词采用一般过去时（其中，be动词大多采用were）。如：
If he had enough money, he would himself a lot of books.
If I were you, I would give her the notebook.
2、针对将来时间
其基本用法为：主句谓语动词采用“would / should/ could / might do”，从句谓语动词采用were to do或should do。如：
If she were to go there tomorrow, I would go there too.
If they should visit our school next Sunday, we could show them around the campus.
（三）第64课
本课学习的还是非真实条件句，只是侧重学习的是针对过去时间的虚拟假设，其基本用法为：主句谓语动词采用“would / should/ could / might have done”，从句谓语动词采用过去完成时。如：
If she had been to the party the night before, she would have met her idol Tom Cruise.
