目标，目的是新文化运动后出现的词汇，大概是对外文的翻译。
英语中有以词汇：
1. goal，目的地，目标.the state of affairs that a plan is intended to achieve and that (when achieved) terminates behavior intended to achieve it.

2.objective, 目标，目的，客观的。the goal intended to be attained (and which is believed to be attainable)

1、aim从本义“靶子”引申而来，侧重比较具体而明确的目标，但常指短期目标。 2、goal侧重于经过考虑和选择，需经坚持不懈的努力奋斗才能达到的最终目标。 3、objective语义更广泛，指具体或很快能达到的目的，也可指军事目标。书面用词。 4、target 侧重于射击的靶，军事攻击目标。引申指被攻击、批评或嘲笑的目标。
5，purpose 是主观意愿，抽象概念。
而古代中文里表达这些概念的词语可能有：
的，客观的靶子，目标
向（去，之，），客观的方向
志，主观的目标
愿，主观愿望
期，期待的事情
西方有关目标的词汇可能与海洋文化有关，航海需要明确的目标，有客观的存在。所以objective也有客观的含义。
农耕文化不太远游，对目标概念更多是主观的愿望。“的”是射箭的靶子，有客观的存在。“去，之，向”则是出行的目标和方向，也是客观的。
