职业是指人们从事的相对稳定的、有收入的、专门方式、经济状况、文化水平、行为模式和思想情操等的务、职责及其社会地位的一般性表征。职业具有经济性等五个基本的特征。职业不同于工作,它更多的是指一种事业。因此,“职业”一词的本意而论,它至少包括两个方面的含义:有高度的专业分工也就不会有现代意义上的职业观念务;其次,它体现一种精神追求，职业发展的过程也是个人价值不断实现的过程，职业要求个人对它有忠诚度。

职业生涯是以满足需求为目标的工作经历，包括工作内容的确定和变化，工作业绩的评价，工资待遇、职称、职务的变动等。职业生涯从内涵上来分，可以分为外职业生涯与内职业生涯。（1）外职业生涯：是指从事一种职业时的工作时间、工作地点、工作单位、工作内容、工作职务与职称、工资待遇、荣誉称号等因素的组合及其变化过程。（2)内职业生涯：是指在职业生涯发展中通过提升自身素质与职业技能而获取的个体综合能力、社会地位与荣誉的总和。内、外职业之间有着紧密的关系。职业生涯有：步步高升型、阅历丰富型、稳扎稳打型、愈战愈勇型、得天独厚型、因故中断型、一心多用型。
