测你是英式英语还是美式英语

Today, we are talking about fluency.

今天,我们来谈谈流利度。

To be fluent is the aim of many people who learn another language but it is very difficult to achieve.

流利是许多人学习另一种语言的目标,但这是很难实现的。

You could have a university degree in English, you could have been learning English for years and years, you could be able to read and write English perfectly, but none of these things necessarily mean that you're truly fluent.

你可能有一个英语专业的大学学位,你可能已经学习了很多年的英语,你可以畅顺地阅读和写作英语,但这些都不一定意味着你真的很流利。

Now, the dictionary definition of fluent is: to be able to express oneself easily and articulately.

字典对流利的定义是:能够轻松、清晰地表达自己。

But fluency is a gradual process and there's no set way to learn that is guaranteed to make you fluent.

但是流利是一个渐进的过程,没有固定的学习方法可以保证你流利。

But today, we are going to be discussing some checkpoints for English proficiency so you can work out where you sit on the scale and work towards your own fluency.

但是今天,我们将讨论一些测试英语熟练程度的关卡,这样你就可以计算出你在量表中的位置,并努力提高自己的流利程度。

Let's just make one thing clear: you do not need to know or understand every single word in the English language in order to be fluent.

让我们明确一件事:你不需要知道或理解英语中的每一个单词才能达到流利。

Believe it or not, there are some English words but I don't even know the meaning of anything that's particularly scientific for example because it's not a vocabulary that I have ever needed to use.

信不信由你,有一些单词,特别是一些科学术语,我甚至都不知道它们的意思,因为我用不到它们。

So, you don't need to learn the entire dictionary in order to be fluent.

所以,你不需要为了达到流利而学习整本字典。

But in this video, I'm going to outline ten ways that you can tell if you are fluent or how close to fluency you are.

但在这段视频中,我将概述十种方法,你可以判断自己是否流利或接近流利。

So, make sure you watch all the way to the end of the video to hear about my new mini series which will help you on your journey to fluency.

所以,一定要看完视频,以了解我新的迷你课程,它们将在你通往流利的旅程中帮助你。

Okay. Let's go.

好。我们开始吧。

Number one, you are fluent if you no longer need to translate in your head before speaking or understanding what's being said.

第一,如果你在说话或理解别人所说的话之前不再需要在脑子里翻译,那么你就很流利了。

Once you are fluent, these things come naturally and you'll find that sometimes you can even speak or listen to something in English without even realizing it's in another language.

一旦你足够流利,这些事情就自然而然地发生了,你会发现有时你甚至可以用英语说或听一些东西,甚至没有意识到它是用另一种语言说的。

Number two, you are fluent if you can understand and join in with jokes and humour in English.

第二,如果你能听懂英语中的笑话和幽默,你就足够流利了。

In Britain, understanding sarcasm is key to this step.

在英国,理解讽刺是这一步的关键。

So, if you're not sure how to use sarcasm, then this might be a good starting point to understanding lots of British humour.

所以,如果你不知道如何使用讽刺,那么这可能是理解英式幽默的一个很好的起点。

Number three, you are fluent if you can understand when somebody is not saying exactly what they mean.

第三,如果你能理解别人说的不是他们真正的意思,你就足够流利了。

This includes things like sarcasm and idioms.

这包括讽刺和习语之类的东西。

Although even I come across some idioms I don't understand from time to time.

尽管有时我也会碰到一些不懂的习语。

Many idioms are regional or used within a specific group of people, so it's okay if occasionally you come across one or two that you don't understand.

很多习语是区域性的,或者是在特定人群中使用的,所以偶尔遇到一两个你不懂的习语也没关系。

But a firm grasp of common idioms is essential for fluency.

但是对常用习语的牢固掌握是流利表达的必要条件。

Number four, you are fluent if you know the right thing to say because it just feels right.

第四,如果你能凭感觉说英语,那你就足够流利了。

Now, this could apply to grammar tenses.

这也适用于语法时态。

Like when you speak in your native language, you're probably not thinking about what tense you're speaking in.

就像当你用你的母语说话时,你可能没有考虑你说的是什么时态。

You're just saying what sounds and feels right.

你只是说了听起来感觉对的东西。

This will be how you speak English too if you are truly fluent.

如果你真的很流利,这也将是你说英语的方式。

You might even forget the rules of grammar and the names of certain tenses, but you know how to use them just because it feels right.

你甚至可能忘记语法规则和某些时态的名称,但你知道如何使用它们,只是因为感觉正确。

Number five, you are fluent if your sentences flow very naturally.

第五,如果你的句子表达得很自然,那你就足够流利了。

You don't find yourself pausing to think or reaching for a vocabulary.

你不会发现自己停下来思考或去查单词。

You are able to just speak freely.

你能够自由地说英语。

You'll also find that you don't need to repeat words or phrases very often because your vocabulary and understanding is vast enough that you have multiple phrases that you can use in almost any situation.

你也会发现你不需要经常重复单词或短语,因为你的词汇量和理解能力足够大,几乎任何场合,你都有足够的短语可以使用。

Number six, you are fluent if, and this one is very important, you are able to pick up on your own mistake and correct them.

第六,这一点很重要,如果你能够发现自己的错误并改正,那么你就足够流利了。

As a native English speaker, even I make small mistakes and miss speak sometimes.

作为一个以英语为母语的人,即使是我也会犯小错误,有时会失语。

The important thing is that you can catch these mistakes as they happen and correct them yourself.

重要的是,当这些错误发生时,你可以发现并改正它们。

Number seven, you are fluent if you find that sometimes you're thinking in English and occasionally, even dreaming in English.

第七,如果你发现有时你在用英语思考,有时甚至在用英语做梦,那你就足够流利了。

There are some phrases that we use that don't translate very well from one language to another.

我们使用的一些短语不能很好地从一种语言翻译成另一种语言。

And to be truly fluent is to be able to understand and recognize when some things just make better sense in one language than another.

真正的流利是能够理解并认识到某些东西在一种语言中比另一种语言更有说得通。

You might find yourself thinking about English customs in English or about something that was originally told to you in English.

你可能会发现自己在用英语思考英国习俗,或者思考一些你最初用英语了解到的东西。

You don't feel the need to try and translate these because your understanding of the language runs so deep that you can keep hold of that information in the language that you learnt it.

你不觉得有必要试着翻译这些,因为你对这门语言的理解如此之深,以至于你可以用所学的语言来掌握这些信息。

Number eight, you are fluent if you can watch TV shows films, read books, magazines, and newspapers and listen to music, podcasts and radio without the need for translations.

第八,如果你可以看电视节目电影,阅读书籍,杂志和报纸,听音乐,播客和广播,不需要翻译,你就足够流利了。

No subtitles, no pausing to look up definitions are necessary.

不用看字幕,不用暂停查字典。

When you are truly fluent, you will be able to keep up with the speed of native speakers.

当你真的说得很流利时,你就能跟上母语人士的速度了。

So, watching a film will be just as easy in English as it would be in your native language.

看英文电影就像看你母语的电影一样容易。

This is one you can definitely practice.

这是你绝对可以练习的。

You could try watching an episode of your favorite TV show without subtitles because your familiarity with the show would hopefully help you to fill in any gaps that you have for now.

你可以试着不带字幕看你最喜欢的电视节目,因为你对这个节目的熟悉将有望帮助你填补那些你听不懂的内容。

Then, you could give yourself something a little more advanced each week until your watching all new episodes without subtitles.

然后,你可以每周多看一点内容,直到你看完所有没有字幕的新剧集。

Number nine, you'll know you're fluent because you feel like yourself when you're talking in English.

第九,当你用英语聊天时,你感觉很自在,那么,你就足够流利了。

This comes with all of those things that I've already mentioned like understanding humour and not having to translate everything.

这与我之前提到的所有事情有关,比如理解幽默,不需要翻译所有东西。

When learning a language, it can be really difficult to make a genuine connection with native speakers sometimes because you feel as if you can't really express yourself properly.

在学习一门语言时,有时很难与以英语为母语的人建立真正的联系,因为你觉得自己不能很好地表达自己。

It's frustrating.

这很令人沮丧。

Once you're fluent, that feeling will go away and you will feel completely yourself while speaking another language.

一旦你足够流利,那种感觉就会消失,当你说另一种语言时,你会完全感到自我。

Number ten and finally, you will be fluent if you stop worrying that people aren't going to understand you.

最后第十,如果你不再担心别人听不懂你的话,那你就足够流利了。

You can walk into a shop, a bank, a dental surgery and so on without worrying about a language barrier getting in the way.

你可以走进商店、银行、牙科诊所等,而不必担心语言障碍。

And the same applies to business and social conversations.

这同样适用于商务和社交对话。

You won't have to prepare what to say in advance and you'll find that people don't have to adapt their usual way of speaking to accommodate your English proficiency level.

你不必事先准备要说什么,你会发现人们不必调整他们通常的说话方式来适应你的英语水平。

You will be able to have any conversation as confidently as an English native speaker.

你将能够像一个以英语为母语的人一样自信地进行任何对话。

So, that's 10 ways that you can tell if you are fluent in English.

以上就是十种判断你英语是否流利的方法。

Do let me know in the comments how many of these things apply to you.

一定要在评论中告诉我你符合多少条。

Now, let's talk about how you can improve your fluency.

现在,让我们来谈谈如何提高你的流利度。

Do you know about the six levels of learning English?

你知道英语学习的六个等级吗?

This is a specification supplied by Cambridge English to determine how advanced your English is and how close to fluency you are.

这是剑桥英语提供的一个规范,用来确定你的英语水平有多高,离达到流利有多近。

The levels run from a 1 which is beginner to C 2 which is proficient.

等级从初级的 A1 到熟练的 C2。

Now, I'm going to be posting videos that will help you test what level you're at and I'll leave links to previous videos that will help you to move up a level.

我会发布一些视频来帮助你们测试自己现在的水平,我会留下一些以前视频的链接来帮助你们提高水平。
