The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday that Washington had provided no evidence to support "speculative" claims by the U.S. president that the new coronavirus originated in a Chinese lab.

"We have not received any data or specific evidence from the United States government relating to the purported origin of the virus – so from our perspective, this remains speculative," WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan told a virtual briefing.

WHO expert Maria Van Kerkhove stressed during Monday's briefing that there were some 15,000 full genome sequences of the novel coronavirus available, and "from all of the evidence that we have seen ... this virus is of natural origin."

While coronaviruses generally originate in bats, both Van Kerkhove and Ryan stressed the importance of discovering how the virus that causes COVID-19 crossed over to humans, and what animal served as an "intermediary host" along the way.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House coronavirus task force and director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the best evidence shows the virus behind the pandemic was not made in a lab in China in a conversation Monday with National Geographic.

"If you look at the evolution of the virus in bats, and what's out there now is very, very strongly leaning toward this (virus) could not have been artificially or deliberately manipulated," Fauci said.

He shot down the discussion that has been raging among politicians and pundits, calling it "a circular argument." Based on the scientific evidence, Fauci also doesn't entertain an alternate theory – that someone found the coronavirus in the wild, brought it to a lab, and then it accidentally escaped, according to National Geographic.

Intelligence shared among Five Eyes nations indicates it is "highly unlikely" that the coronavirus was spread as a result of an accident in a laboratory, CNN reported Tuesday, noting the two Western officials who cited the intelligence assessment that appears to contradict claims by U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"It is highly likely it was naturally occurring and that the human infection was from natural human and animal interaction," one of the officials said. The Five Eyes is an intelligence alliance made up of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Despite the increasing number of conclusions reached by scientists across the world that the novel coronavirus originated naturally, many politicians in the United States have been stigmatizing China by reciting lies and spreading rumors, claiming that it was created in a lab or was man-made.

On May 3, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed in an interview that there was "enormous evidence" linking the origins of COVID-19 to a lab in Wuhan, the Chinese city hit hardest by the virus. President Donald Trump also stated that he had seen evidence supporting this theory during a press briefing at the White House. However, when asked what it was, he said, "I can't tell you that."

On April 29, Pompeo lashed out at the WHO during a daily press conference, saying: "It failed in its mission here, and so we're conducting a review to figure out how best to use American taxpayer money to deliver real outcomes."

On April 8, when asked about U.S. donations to the WHO, Pompeo claimed that they're reevaluating their funding with respect to the WHO, as "it hasn’t accomplished what it was intended to deliver."

On March 24, Pompeo criticized that China delayed its response "in a way that has truly put thousands of lives at risk" during an interview with Tony Perkins of Washington Watch.

Ryan warned that if questions about the virus origin were "projected as aggressive investigation of wrongdoing, than I believe that's much more difficult to deal with. That is a political issue."

"Science needs to be at the center," he said.

"If we have a science-based investigation and a science-based enquiry as to what the origin species and the intermediate species are, then that will benefit everybody on the planet."
